FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING
Our natural aging
process and sun exposure produces fine wrinkles and crepey skin.
Acne scars and hormonally based pigment such as melasma are also
common. Traditionally the only available treatments were invasive
procedures such as ablative CO2 lasers and chemical peels that removed the
entire outer layer of the skin which was not only painful but
required weeks of healing. Finally we have a proven, safe approach
to resurfacing the skin with minimal down time. Our fractional
laser technology produces thousands of microscopic but deep columns
of heat in the skin, known as microthermal treatment zones, which
stimulate collagen production. The skin around the columns remains
intact and allows the skin to heal much faster, leaving healthier
skin with a reduction in wrinkles and acne scars. Because it
penetrates deeper than the IPL laser, it is also a good option for
treatment of pigment in darker skinned individuals and hormonal
pigment such as melasma.
Unlike at medi-spas
and most doctor's offices, Dr. Shibayama insists on evaluating and
performing all photofacials herself for optimal safety and
effectiveness.
Who is a good
candidate for fractional laser resurfacing?
Patients of all skin types who desire the reduction of wrinkles,
acnes scars, and pigment as well as those who would like an
improvement in skin tone and texture (such as pore size) are great
candidates for this procedure.
What areas are
commonly treated?
The wrinkles around the eyes and lips are the most popular areas
that are treated. Most patients request full face treatments to
improve overall skin tone and texture or acne scarring. Because the
fractional laser spares surrounding tissue, even delicate skin areas
such as neck, chest, and hands can be treated.
What are the
treatments like?
Unlike older technologies (such as Fraxel), this newer
technology is much more comfortable and no messy blue dye is
needed. The laser is placed against cleaned skin and the laser
treatment feels like a series of pin pricks. With topical anesthesia
(numbing cream) this procedure is well tolerated.
What can I
expect after treatment?
After your treatment you will experience a mild sunburn like
sensation and swelling that will last for a few hours. You will
also have some mild redness that may last for a day or two. There
may be some mild bronzing that is easily covered with moisturizers
and makeup. In a week you will develop some dryness, and when
this flakes off fresher skin starts to reveal itself. The use of sunscreen is key to protecting your new skin
as it heals.
How often are
treatments needed?
Typically, three to five treatments, spaced one month apart are
recommended. Your skin will continue to improve for four to six
months after the last treatment. Dr. Shibayama will customize a
treatment plan for you.
All procedures
are performed by Dr. Shibayama.
